Volgograd

Volgograd: overview

In the XX century, this city played one of the significant roles in the history of Russia. The retreat of German troops during the Second World War began right here, on the territory of modern Volgograd. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the decisive ones. Located on the right bank of the Volga, Volgograd is one of the largest cities in Russia. It is the center of the Volgograd region with a population of just over a million people. The uniqueness of this city is in its length. It stretches for 85-90 km along the river, and if you take into account the nearest suburb, its length exceeds 120 km. This location makes Volgograd very specific, as it will take almost 4 hours to cross the city. Throughout the history of its existence, the city has changed its name and appearance more than once: the pre-revolutionary Tsaritsyn went from a border military town to a large industrial center; Soviet Stalingrad went down in history as an indestructible fortress of the human spirit. Modern Volgograd, which is the administrative center of the Volgograd region, remains an important industrial and scientific center of Russia. It is also called the port of the five seas, because the Volga-Don Canal connects the warm southern seas - the Black, Azov, Caspian - with the cold Baltic and North. This is the reason that trade is being developed intensively and business life is lived in the city. Tourists are attracted by the rich history of Volgograd and its picturesque location. The pompous Soviet Empire style quite peacefully coexists with cozy European cafes and restaurants, in the green and comfortable historical part of the city. The main attractions of Volgograd are architectural monuments, sculptural compositions, and museums combined into a colossal memorial complex "Battle of Stalingrad", which has the status of a museum reserve. There are many Orthodox Christian shrines in Volgograd - convents, churches, monasteries, holy springs. They are of interest not only for pilgrims but also for those who are not indifferent to the history and culture of this land.
