Altai: overview

Altai Republic is literally translated as "Golden Land". This corner of Russia is shrouded in mysteries and legends of ancient ancestors. The extraordinary beauty and sights of Altai annually attract hundreds of thousands of tourists. Many of them come back here again and again. Altai is called "a place of power" and is compared in beauty with Switzerland. Majestic mountains, numerous mountain lakes, breathtaking views, unique local culture and legends are met at every step here. This place has everything including: snowy peaks, rushing rivers, endless plains, purest lakes and landscapes of incredible beauty. At the same time, there are two Altai on the map of the country: the Altai Territory with endless fields and the famous resort of Belokurikha - and the small Altai Mountains (Gorny Altai), which separated from it a long time ago. People come here to escape from the hustle and bustle to have a moment alone with nature. Gorny Altai is the complete opposite of noisy cities with round-the-clock illumination and supermarkets at every turn. The local way of life has hardly changed for decades. The herds of horses still graze here, people trust the Spirits, and mobile communication is not stable. There are villages here that can’t be reached by car most of the year, and locals carry water with a yoke and bake their own bread. This is the perfect place for anyone who wants to escape from the world of progress for a while and find themselves in the wild. The water in the streams is cleaner than tap water, just raise your head to see the stars at night. There is no such silence as here in the city. Altai is a unique land of contrasts. Due to its horizontal location, this area contains several completely opposite climatic zones. On a one hicke you can get to semi-desert dry steppes and impenetrable coniferous taiga; endless meadows and eternal snows, mountain peaks, caves, grottoes and ... be surprised by the countless number of lakes, fast cold rivers with an abundance of rapids and beautiful mountain waterfalls. These natural features determine the versatility of Gorny Altai is a place for active leisure and extreme travel, up to SPA and healthy recreation. This place is equally good for the road trip and jeep tour lovers, as well as for aquatic and equestrian sports ones, climbers, skiers, hikers, fishermen, and naturalist researchers.
